Amos L. Smith is the President and CEO at the Community Action Agency of New Haven, Inc., since May 2006. He manages a budget of $20 million for an organization that serves approximately 35,000 individuals covering 25 towns across the New Haven region. Mr. Smith supervises 5 senior administrators responsible for 50 employees. Before joining Community Action, Mr. Smith served as Director of Health Grant- making at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven (TCF). During his 7 ½ years there, he was responsible for overseeing health related projects and securing grants to support the organization’s work. While at TCF, Mr. Smith served as the principal investigator for the New Haven Healthy Start Project focused on improving maternal and child health outcomes in New Haven. He has consistently demonstrated the capacity and the temperament for addressing uncommon community challenges and working within cross- disciplinary and highly complex settings to address the needs of clients and customers in these communities. Concurrently Mr. Smith serves as the President of the New England Association of Community Action Agencies, an entity of approximately 53 community action agencies across the six (6) New England States that annually serve nearly 2 million clients. He also serves as the 1 st Vice President of Connecticut Association for Community Action (CAFCA); and as a Community Advisory Member of the Connecticut Health Foundation, the largest health foundation in the state. Mr. Smith has been a panelist at a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Summit: The Science of Eliminating Health Disparities with a focus on Health Disparities among Men of Color. It is in this area where he published an article in The American Journal of Public Health, May 2003, entitled “Health Policy and the Coloring of an American Male Crisis: A Perspective on Community-Based Health Services.” Throughout his life and career Mr. Smith has been a thought leader, strategist and risk-taker receiving numerous awards and recognition for his work. Mr. Smith was appointed by former Governor Dannel Malloy to the Health and Human Services Commission for two (2) years. Some of his accolades have been the Donner Foundation of New York’s Prevention Award; The Yale Consultation Center Award; recognition by the National Association of Black Social Workers; and the Hartford Chapter, Kappa Alpha Psi and the Farmington Valley Chapter of LINKS for promoting innovative and effective programs for the members of the New Haven and Hartford communities.
